Newcastle United poised to take steps to shut down concerns over Rafa Benitez's future – here's how

Newcastle United chiefs have told Rafa Benitez they are prepared to tie up his extension deal as soon as he is ready.

Benitez knows the ball is in his court as far as his future at the club is concerned.

But United would like an answer from Benitez as quickly as possible as they are growing concerned about new names being linked with the managerial hotseat – with agents of potential candidates thriving on the chance to push their clients forward for the post.

That was the case for Lyon boss Bruno Genesio this week while Benitez himself was linked with the Real Sociedad job for next season.

A long-term offer is on the table for Benitez and the deal will make him one of the top six earners in the Premier League – although has never been about personal fortune for the ex-Liverpool boss on Tyneside.

The deal will also contain a host of incentives if United make further progress in the Premier League.

United are well aware of the potential backlash if they fail to secure Benitez’s services with the club’s fanbase demanding he stays on after three positive years.

Improvements to the Academy have now been sanctioned but there is still no agreement on transfer funds or clarity on exactly how much there will be to spend.

Although, United have indicated that signings such as Miguel Almiron are possible again this summer.

But Benitez needs to be convinced that the painstaking process he endured in summer 2017 and 2018 is not repeated.

Benitez is keen to stay in the UK but knows he will have offers from Spain and Italy next season if he can’t reach an agreement with United.
