Former rugby star Alan Quinlan will open up about his mental health battle at a special event next month.
He will be speaking at ‘Leitrim Health is Wealth’ on March 27, which will be presented by journalist and Leitrim Person of the Year Paul Williams.
The free event will take place at the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Leitrim Health is Wealth hopes to de-stigmatise mental health issues and spread the message that “it’s okay not to be okay and it’s okay to look for help”.
Organisers, Hubert McHugh and Valerie Cogan, work as community mental health nurses in Co Leitrim and hope to empower those struggling with mental illness.
The event will also have a range of guests speaking about their own battles with mental health issues.
Eurovision winner Charlie McGettigan will make a guest appearance on the night.
Adi Roche, from Chernobyl Ireland, will speak about her years of volunteer work.
Former rugby player and journalist Alan Quinlan will speak about his own experience with depression and his path to recovery.
Mikey Drennan, who plays for St Patrick’s Athletic, will talk of how gambling and isolation affected his life and his mental health.
Attendees will also have the chance to hear Professor Geraldine McCarthy, a consultant psychiatrist with Sligo/Leitrim mental health services, on healthy ageing and local initiative.
Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan, will discuss his observations of human nature and Irish society.
