Trent Alexander-Arnold's one Liverpool problem – and how Jurgen Klopp is

Jurgen Klopp has allayed fears over the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold – but suggests the Liverpool youngster could be paying the price for his enthusiasm this summer.

Alexander-Arnold has proven a huge success since breaking into the Reds’ first team having this year appeared in the Champions League final and lined up for eventual semi-finalists England at the World Cup.

However, the 20-year-old has experienced a difficult time since opting to cut short his scheduled holiday after the finals in Russia to resume pre-season training with Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold was hauled off at half-time during Tuesday’s dismal 2-0 Champions League reverse at Red Star Belgrade, and could be benched for Sunday’s Premier League visit of Fulham.

But Klopp is keen to point out such a dip is commonplace for young players.

“Trent is a very young boy still,” said the Reds boss. “He had two weeks off in the summer, that’s not a lot.

“It’s clear we try to have an eye constantly on him fitness-wise, not working with the group, stuff like that.

“We speak constantly but not about these things that were good or not good, it’s more general. Advice, information, whatever.

“So he’s actually in a good moment. He’s played a lot of football and he will play a lot of football.

“That’s good for him. Most important is that he can stay injury-free and everything will be fine.

“These are normal things. Don’t point the finger too much, accept it.

“It will not be the first time or the last time when something will not be 100% in his life but he is still an outstanding player for us, really important and so it’s all good.”

Klopp added: “I’m lucky, I had only really good right-backs to be honest. Okay, at Mainz I had too many, because they played a good season then they were away!

“I had Lukasz Piszczek at Dortmund which was fantastic. In this age group, it’s quite exceptional.”

Alexander-Arnold – called up for England’s forthcoming friendly against the United States and UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia – has recently rotated with Joe Gomez at right-back while Nathaniel Clyne started the League Cup defeat to Chelsea in September.

And asked if he will monitor the youngster’s playing time, Klopp said: “We did that already, Joe played a few games on the right full-back position.

“He’s (Trent) really important for the way we play. Only because we have the option to change it, we can. We have a number of players in that position.”
