Just who is the greatest footballer of all-time?
It’s an argument that anyone who has watched the beautiful game has had.
Opinions will always differ but speak to those of another generation and the likes of Diego Maradona and Pele will come up.
But Ronaldinho and Zinedine Zidane have squeezed their way into the conversation.
And today? Well, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the game’s biggest superstars and both will be spoken about for decades to come.
The generational gap makes it difficult to compare modern players to those of yesteryear but it’s hard to overlook the achievements of Messi and Ronaldo when it comes to naming the greatest of all-time.
The two have transcended the sport, breaking several records and reaching a level that many can only dream of getting to.
In the eyes of Manchester City winger Leroy Sane, Messi deserves to be considered the GOAT.
Sane named two players when asked for his choice, though, and the other one wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo.
Instead, the Germany international named Ronaldinho as his other pick.
“I guess I’d go for either Messi or Ronaldinho 👏🏾,” Sane said during a Twitter Q&A.
Well, that will leave Ronaldo’s supporters disappointed.
It’s hardly a surprise that Sane named Messi as one of his choices. In January, the 22-year-old revealed that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has asked him to play with the same level as freedom that the Barcelona star does.
“Pep told me to play with freedom like Messi, not like Messi – it’s impossible,” Sane told The Guardian.
“Be free like Messi, have fun, do things like he wants from a striker like the end of the space [near goal] – take the option to shoot or give an assist.”
Sane has enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season as Man City cruised to the Premier League title.
